The former lead singer of
"Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes"is now... Solo!
Native Philadelphian singer/songwriter Gil Saunders holds a solid record as a lead vocalist and dynamic entertainer. Listening to the family radio as a child, Gil began singing at a very young age. Losing his mother at the tender age of five and his father when he was eleven, Gil and his six siblings learned to express their emotions through music, which began in church. To this day, they regularly get together and sing, keeping the family ties very close.
During his teenage years, Gil and his friends would gather on the neighborhood corners singing their favorite tunes. Sounding much like David Ruffin, Marvin Johnson Jr. of the Dells, and James Tuten of the Ebonys, family and friends urged Gil to launch a singing career.
During a live performance of Gil's own group, "Nu Daye", Gil's endless energy and electrifying stage presence gained him recognition by Harold Melvin. Soon after, Gil took position as lead singer for Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes in 1982. In 1984, the group recorded the album, "Talk it Up"(Tell Everybody"). Saunders added stability to the entourage with no more changes, which lasted for nearly 10 years. During a PBS Special, fellow Bluenote, Bill Sprately, introduced Gil as the answer to all their unanswered questions.
Although the Philadelphia Daily News named Gil as the Teddy Pendergrass Clone, Saunders has his own unique sound and style.
Gil's baritone voice is so very powerful that he captivates his audience and they become mesmerized as he performs the hits of the past as well as his new material.
With his love for children, Saunders devotes time throughout the year to the Variety Club as well as other fund raisers and benefits.
Writing and compiling original song material throughout the years, Gil is back in the studio recording his own unique and personal sound. His new CD is to be released in the very new future. Keeping within the tradition of Rhythm and Blues, Gil Saunders' music is very emotional, heartfelt, and moving as his audiences no doubt experience. Saunders says it is his duty as an artist to leave the audience upbeat, happy and feeling good.
Gil Saunders receives much acclaim, yet he is a quiet humble soul.
